North-South Corridor Gallery Exhibition: The Golden Age of the Comic Strip

The 1930s–1950s were vibrant years for the production of newspaper comics, and this exhibition will showcase the Society’s rarely seen examples, many of which were collected by the well–known former editor of the Mexico Ledger, L. Mitchell White, and his son, Robert M. Works by some of the greatest artists of the genre will be displayed, with original pen and ink drawings for classic strips such as Mutt and Jeff, Little Orphan Annie, and Blondie, and cartoons from the workshop of Walt Disney.

This event is presented as a dialogue between characters presenting Black stereotypes and the audience after a short skit. The goal is for Blacks to address various topics in education, music, career options, gender and class stereotypes while in character. The goal of this event is for audience members to perceive Blacks in a different perspective after hearing them address stereotypes. The event will have a moderator to ensure that the discussions are productive and not monopolized by any one person. Sponsored by the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center.

Last December, MU Geography professors Mike Urban and Mark Cowell attended the United Nations climate change conference (COP15) in Copenhagen, Denmark as observers for the Association of American Geographers. Drs. Urban and Cowell will share their observations of the meeting and discuss some of the issues related to science, advocacy, politics, diplomacy and economics that were central to the UN negotiation process.

The performances showcase an array of Chinese performance arts rooted in the more than 5,000 years of Chinese history. The program includes native Chinese performance: ethnic folk dances from China’s diverse regions; folk music including vocal performance and ancient Chinese musical instrument playing; Chinese acrobatics; martial arts exhibitions and etc. In addition, there would be modern arts like ‘Hip-hop’ dancing and rock and roll bands directed and performed by Chinese students with Chinese rhythm. Emily Wilson has been acting and improvising in Chicago for over ten years at places like i.O Chicago, The Annoyance Theater, and Second City. She is currently a member of the Mainstage cast of America: All Better at Second City, which she also co-wrote. Beyond improv, Emily has an extensive sketch background. She holds a degree in theatre from MU and will be in-residence on March 4 to work with students in the Department of Theatre to present an evening of improvisation. A reception will follow the performance.

The William Francis English Scholar-in-Residence Program honors the lifetime achievements of W. Francis English, dean of the College of Arts & Science from 1955 to 1968. Established in 1989 through a generous gift to the College by Elizabeth English and members and friends of the English family, the program attracts leading scholars and public figures to campus.

Wilson, along with the MU Improv troupe under the direction of doctoral student, Matt Fotis, will create a show entirely on the spot without a script, using the tools, techniques, and skills of Chicago-based improvisational theatre.

To breath humans need oxygen, while plants on the other hand need carbon dioxide. At this week’s Saturday Morning Science talk MU chemist Rainer Glaser will explore how plants grab carbon dioxide from the air and what approaches we can borrow to decrease current carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Glaser will describe atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and ways that are being discussed to stem the increase.

You don’t need to be a scientist to enjoy this free, one hour talk on Saturday, March 6th. All ages are welcome. They have nothing: just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless cannibalistic bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a rusting shopping cart of scavenged food--and each other. At this week’s Saturday Morning Science talk MU scientist Stephen Pallardy will describe how the earth’s forest are both contributing and removing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Pallardy will also explore how forests can play a role in improving greenhouse gas emissions.

Technology allows scientists to explore unknown parts of the world. Technology advances created for ocean exploration have greatly enhanced our understanding of the underwater world. At this week’s Saturday Morning Science, Dr. William Seyfried Jr, from the University of Minnesota will discuss how new technology has enhanced our understanding of the origin and evolution of deep-sea hydrothermal vents. These vents are openings in the ocean basins which water is heated from geothermal movement. Seyfried will share new developments and application in this challenging area of ocean science research.
You don’t need to be a scientist to enjoy this free, one hour talk on Saturday, April 17^th. All ages are welcome. Award-winning poets Julie Buchsbaum and Joanie Mackowski are alums of MU’s Creative Writing Program. Buchsbaum is the author of Slowly, Slowly, Horses and A Little Night Comes, recipient of the Del Sol Press Award. Mackowski’s first book, The Zoo, received both the AWP Award Series in Poetry and the Kate Tufts Discovery Prize. Her second book, View from a Temporary Window, is due to appear in late January.

The University of Missouri will recognize exceptional student leaders at the 82nd annual Tap Day ceremony. Members of the six honorary organizations – LSV, Mortar Board, Mystical Seven, Omicron Delta Kappa, QEBH and the Rollins Society – will “tap” their new inductees into the societies. Current members of the organizations choose the new inductees. The new members’ identities are a secret until they are revealed at this ceremony. MU faculty and students will participate in the ceremony. Speakers will include: Chancellor Brady Deaton, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Cathy Scroggs and the MSA President Tim Noce. Tap Day recognizes the exemplary performances of students in academics and extracurricular activities. Students are selected based on scholarship, leadership and service achievements. Honorees also “tap” faculty and/or staff members they think have contributed significantly to the student experience at MU.
