North-South Corridor Gallery Exhibition: The Golden Age of the Comic Strip

The 1930s–1950s were vibrant years for the production of newspaper comics, and this exhibition will showcase the Society’s rarely seen examples, many of which were collected by the well–known former editor of the Mexico Ledger, L. Mitchell White, and his son, Robert M. Works by some of the greatest artists of the genre will be displayed, with original pen and ink drawings for classic strips such as Mutt and Jeff, Little Orphan Annie, and Blondie, and cartoons from the workshop of Walt Disney.

C.A.R.P. Columbia Aquatic Restoration Project

C.A.R.P. is a volunteer program desiged to support the Columbia Parks & Recreation Department in implementing an aquatic plant and shoreline management plan. Author Mark Twain and artist Thomas Hart Benton were kindred spirits who epitomized Missouri’s cultural character. Benton’s
illustrations for Twain’s books are one of Missouri’s great artistic treasures, and a selection of these drawings will be featured in this
exhibition. Visitors will also see portraits of Twain and Benton, as well as objects such as Mark Twain’s pipe and Benton’s handwritten
sheet music. Through the first week of this show, March 13-21, the MU Department of Textile and Apparel Management’s Missouri
Historic Costume and Textile Collection will display related period dress and design.

“Heads vs. Feds” is a debate on the legalization of marijuana featuring Steve Hager and Bob Stutman. Hager, a reporter and long-time marijuana legalization activist, is editor-in-chief of High Times magazine, represents the Pro side of the debate. Stutman, his opponent, retired from the DEA in 1990 as Special Agent in charge of the New York division.

Come watch and participate as these two experts battle it out in one of the most prevalent debates of our time. Learn about the social, political, economic and judicial implications and form your own opinion on the issue of “Heads vs. Feds.”

To celebrate the centennial of Mark Twain's death, the Paul Anthony Brick Lecture Series presents three lectures given by Ron Powers, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Emmy Award commentator. Powers, who was born in Hannibal Mo., says the town was influential in much of his writing and his fascination with Twain began in childhood. His books include The Man Who Flew the Memphis Belle, Flags of Our Fathers, and Mark Twain: a Life.

The lecture series will take place at 4:00 p.m. on March 17, 18, and 19 and will include the lectures: "Inheritance: Mark Twain's Role in Shaping Our Native Truthtelling Voice," "The Evolution of the Truthtelling Impulse from Mark Twain to James Agee to the New Journalists and Literary Nonfiction," and "The Struggle to Preserve Truthtelling in the Age of Narcissism, Spin, and the Sanctioned Lie" respectively.

Keith Eggener, associate professor of art history and archaeology, helps to celebrate the centennial of Mark Twain's death with a lecture about Twain's boyhood home in Hannibal, Mo. The home that Twain was born in is a two room cabin - the most impressive part of the cabin is the fact that is has survived. Eggener will talk about the town of 10,000 and how it hosts a half a million visitors a year who come to see the shrine dedicated to one of America's most beloved authors.

Finn Kydland is the Jeffrey Henley Professor of Economics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and 2004 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences. Kydland was awarded the Nobel Prize jointly with Professor Edward Prescott of Arizona State University for their research on business cycles and macroeconomic policy. His recent research has been on the role of monetary policy in the aggregate economy, domestically as well as internationally.
Kydland will be the plenary speaker for the 10th Annual Economics Conference which is jointly sponsored by the Department of Economics and the Research Divisions of the Federal Reserve Banks of St. Louis and Kansas City.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together leading research economists from the Federal Reserve, businesses, and academic institutions in the Eighth and Tenth Federal Reserve districts.

The event is free and open to the public.

Technology allows scientists to explore unknown parts of the world. Technology advances created for ocean exploration have greatly enhanced our understanding of the underwater world. At this week’s Saturday Morning Science, Dr. William Seyfried Jr, from the University of Minnesota will discuss how new technology has enhanced our understanding of the origin and evolution of deep-sea hydrothermal vents. These vents are openings in the ocean basins which water is heated from geothermal movement. Seyfried will share new developments and application in this challenging area of ocean science research.

Young scientists in nearly every field are finding today's job market a confusing and frustrating place. More new PhDs, post-docs and master's degree holders are considering a wider range of careers in and out of science but feel ill-prepared and uninformed about their options.

In this workshop I present a thorough and practical overview to the process of career planning and job hunting in today's job market, from the perspective of a young scientist. I cover specific steps that young scientists can take to broaden their horizons, strengthen their skills, and present their best face to potential employers. An important part of this is the realization that most young scientists possess a range of valuable "transferable skills" that are highly sought after by employers in and out of science. I also cover all the specifics of job hunting, including informational interviewing, building your network, developing a compelling CV and resume, cover letters, interviewing, and more. With each topic I discuss the particular challenges and opportunities faced by those with an advanced degree in science. My workshop is upbeat in tone and positive in outlook.

The workshop includes a 35-page handout for each participant. The workshop works best with 100-300 students and is suitable for graduate students and post-docs in all areas of science and engineering.

Workshop fee: $2,000 plus travel expenses.

You may recognize DJ Pauly D from a certain reality TV show, and now you will have the chance to see him at The Blue Note in Columia on May 5th, 2010.

DJ Pauly D has the incredible ability to control and please a crowd. This Italian DJ is definitely a ladies man to the fullest extreme, any spot he spins at will be packed with beautiful women, dying for a glimpse of him and what he does. What he is able to do with his hands and 2 turntables is utterly incredible. He has surpassed the capabilities of most local DJ’s and the vibe he brings is beyond powerful. He strides in keeping the dance floor moving and the way he feeds off their energy is fascinating.
